A dotwork pen and ink drawing of an antique medicine bottle

POISON I  2021
Nicola Howell Hawley (b.1987-)
Dip pen, ink and gouache
£120 Framed

The medicine bottles collection is a study of glass and light. I wanted to bring vintage and contemporary elements together so I used a dip pen and ink with a more contemporary dotwork application, striving to make it reminiscent of antique sketches you sometimes find in National Trust properties and in antique shops. I wanted the light, reflections, letters and shape of the bottle to really come through. I then gave it a contemporary, pop-art, solid-colour background in gouache, but left a hint of the thick paint application in the brush strokes. I framed it as though you would indeed find it in the National Trust, with a thick textured mount and antique-reminiscent frame.
